EU leaders: Prevent refugees from freezing to death!

Last summer, we witnessed a great tragedy in the Mediterranean, when thousands of families that were fleeing the war in Syria faced a dangerous sea journey that ended many times in the drowning of men, women and children. Right now there is another tragedy, quieter, but equally terrible: the harsh winter that is experiencing eastern Europe is seriously affecting thousands of refugees living in improvised camps.

In these camps in Greece and the Balkans have been recorded temperatures lower than minus 25 degrees celsius. To combat this terrible cold, the refugees only have precarious tents, just a slight relief from snow and frigid weather. The consequences? Discomfort, diseases and even death by freezing: at this moment there are at least five deaths confirmed. And, of course, those who suffer most are the children, according to reports from UNICEF and other organizations.

It’s time to strongly demand an urgent solution to help refugees that are facing still more weeks of cold temperatures. Sign this petition and ask the leaders of the EU to sit with the governments of Greece, Serbia and other countries affected by the cold wave to find alternative shelter for refugees, within these countries or distributing them in the rest of Europe, as it has been long promised.
