Fire the police officer who hit a woman at an abortion rally!

  • by: OD Action

Following the devastating overturn of Roe and Dobbs, protests rightfully erupted across the country. In a Rhode Island town, a woman fighting for her right to an abortion was struck in the face twice by a Providence police officer (who was previously running for Senate, as a Republican… go figure.) Democrat Jennifer Rourke, his opponent for the same Senate seat, was punched ON FILM by Patrolman Jeann Lugo, and yet Lugo has refrained from admitting or denying the assault.

While a formal internal investigation found that Lugo "violated department rules and regulations regarding obedience to laws and rules, standard of conduct, courtesy, rules governing conduct, and demeanor.", his removal from the police department is still up in the air. As of now, he has been suspended without pay pending a July 8th hearing.

Police Chief of Rhode Island's capital, Hugh Clements, said that he had "lost confidence in [Lugo's] capacity and ability to exercise self-control, and to conduct [himself] in a civil, respectful and professional manner." Subsequently, Clements wrote a recommendation that Lugo's employment be terminated. There is no question that it should.
