Make it mandatory that ALL needles be retractable!

Leaving used needles on the streets, beaches, and even at bus tops for children has become an increasingly concerning issue in my community. On 01/31/18 there were several used needles found on the ground at a children's bus stop. Thankfully, parents had walked their children to the bus stop on this particular day and were able to collect the needles before any children came into contact with them. This is hazardous to children's health. If all needles were retractable it would pretty much eliminate the potential for a needle stick injury. This NEEDS to happen. Or do we really need to begin teaching kindergartners how to recognize and handle hazardous materials such as used needles? This madness must STOP. It is in the best interest of our children and community to eliminate exposure to used needles. Furthermore, after the needles were discovered, a phone call was placed to the police who told the parents who had discovered them to dispose of them themselves at a nearby clinic. I am a Registered Nurse. Disposal of used needles properly is something individuals need to be educated on. Not something they should just know how to do. I believe mandating all needles to be retractable could eliminate needle stick injuries, as well as any subsequent potential health concerns which may follow. Not everyone is insured. Not everyone has the resources to follow up with a physician after suffering a needle stick injury. Also, if follow up is needed, who should pay for this?!
