As smoke and ash from the wildfires raging in Canada rain over the East Coast and giving New York City the worst air quality of any major city in the world, it's a prime opportunity to remind everyone that there are literally zero limits on how much pollution American power plants are allowed to emit.
You read that right — ZERO. The Biden administration is set to pass new rules that could reduce pollution emissions from US power plants by as much as 90%, but it's bound to face fierce resistance from fossil fuel companies who get rich off of polluting the air and destroying the environment.
Tell the Biden team to hold firm and put limits on power plant pollution!
The American Lung Association estimates that about 1 in 4 people in the United States – more than 119 million residents – live with air pollution that can hurt their health and shorten their lives, costing the nation $820 billion in extra health bills a year. A disproportionate number of those people are people of color.
But it's not all bad news. According to one study, every dollar spent on air pollution control methods reaps $30 worth of benefits! It's a win-win for everyone except the greedy companies that made huge profits off of destroying American lungs. It's critical for both public health and the environment that the EPA holds firm and passes new rules to limit power plant pollution in America.
Tell Biden not to cave to the fossil fuel industry and put an end to power plant pollution!
