Utah Judge Michael Kwan is currently on suspension without pay for six months due to comments he made online and, in one case, in the courtroom that were critical of President Trump and his policies.
Though Kwan has expressed regret over the comments, he feels the Utah Supreme Court's decision is unnecessarily harsh. That's because it is – Kwan has a right to express himself, per the First Amendment.
Kwan's suspension is a political act meant to not only silence him, but to silence others in the government who might consider being critical of Trump. It's especially telling, as Trump himself has successfully nominated several judges who have been far more vocal and open about their negative opinions of President Barack Obama and the Clintons.
