Government of Galicia: adopt measures to stop wildfires NOW

  • by: Fabio Pumar

Another year, the lack of rain and the strong winds have turned the Spanish region of Galicia into a powder keg. Hundreds of wildfires, most of them intentionally caused, have devastated thousands of hectares of forest, destroying biodiversity and threatening the lives and property of thousands of people.

Apart from the need to identify and arrest those responsible for starting the fires, we can not let pass another year without taking measures to prevent that Galicia is ravaged by fires whenever the wind blows and there is no rain. To achieve this, I want to ask the regional government of Galicia to commit to:

- Approve a new forestry policy to promote the cleaning and exploitation of the forests of Galicia in an organized, sustainable and global way, and to promote the replacement of pyrophytes species such as pine and eucalyptus by others with higher added value.
- Approve a strategic plan for rural areas to avoid severe depopulation of towns and villages in Galicia.
- Invest not only in fire extinguishing measures, but also fire prevention.

Sign this petition and help me to ask these needed measures. Together we can beat the wildfires.
