On Friday, December 14th, 2012, a heavily armed man walked into yet another school in America and unleashed terror on children and teachers, assassinating twenty little boys and girls between the ages of five and seven years old, and six adults including teachers and the school principal. There was no police officer or SRO (School Resource Police Officer) on duty at the school.
We can no longer assume that our schools are safe or think that this will never happen to us. WE ASK THAT THE LEADERS OF ASHEVILLE AND BUNCOMBE COUNTY TAKE IMMEDTIATE ACTION TO ENSURE THAT THIS HORRIBLE CRIME WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN OUR COMMUNITY.
As Citizens of the City of Asheville and Buncombe County, North Carolina we petition that our community leaders direct their attention to this issue and devise a strategy that insures the absolute safety and security off all the children attending public schools in our communities. Until such time that a new plan to "Protect Our Children" is funded and implemented, we ask that an armed and on-duty Police Officer or Sheriff be at every public school in Asheville and Buncombe County with their official car parked in a clear and obvious place at the school entrance during school hours.
Let us be clear, there is nothing more important to us than the safety of our community's children.
In light of the news of yet another horrific tragedy of a massacre of children and teachers in a school in our country on Friday, December 14th, it is now time that we take the steps to assure our community that this WILL NEVER HAPPEN HERE.
As a taxpayer it is nice to drive on good roads, and to enjoy all of the things that our taxes provide and there is NOTHING MORE IMPORTANT than the security and safe keeping of our community's children. Please sign this petition asking our public leaders to act immediately to provide each of our City and County Public Schools with an on-duty Police Officer or Sheriff during the hours that children are in attendance, while simultaneously working to develop and implement a permanent plan to "Protect Our Children" while in the custody of our Public Schools.
Let us seize this moment while the emotions of this horrible crime are fresh in our hearts and minds and not wait another moment.
Ask our City and County leaders to take action immediately to protect our children and assure that this sort of tragedy NEVER HAPPENS HERE.
