Sincerest greetings J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, to whom we owe our childhoods.
Greetings also to Jack Thorne and John Tiffany who wrote the script for the Cursed Child with Ms. Rowling.
I consider this the greatest honour if ever this letter reaches to you. I would like to begin by saying that I loved your recent play script for the next installment of the Harry Potter series. I must say that really and truly, seeing my favourite childhood characters being once again brought to life on the pages of a book was magical, especially considering that I had long given up hope that I would ever be privileged enough to hold another Harry Potter book in my hand after the release of Deathly Hallows. I live very far away from London and consequently have not seen the play as yet, but please be assured that it has gone down on my bucket list.
Having established my adoration for your past and present works, I would like to you know that reading the script was one of the greatest experiences of my adulthood, being able to reconnect with characters whom I had not heard from in ages. I fell in love with Albus and Scorpius and their pairing. I will tell you why, but first let me put this in some perspective. I grew up in a homophobic country in the Caribbean. I still continue to live here til this very day and though we may have it somewhat better than other places, the anti-gay laws and the homophobic mindsets of the population proves that we have very, VERY far to go still. Growing up gay in a homosexual country has not been easy. We are forced to live double lives. One of the things that helped me survive while growing up, was that I was able to read stories on the internet. These stories, were from gay authors from all over the world who created a literary version of lives we wished we could lead and put them on the internet to share with others who may feel saddened or struggling to carry on, just like myself.
Now the relevance of this, is that when I read the interactions between Albus and Scorpius, it reminded me of those stories; of two young boys falling in love with each other, despite being in an unwelcoming environment; despite being unsure of their future, despite being unsure of themselves. I saw myself reflected in those characters; in the young boy who fell in love with another young boy. Or rather, I felt myself reflected in what I WISHED I could have experienced growing up. It was not until I started university that I was able to go on a date, or be with another boy. Growing up was not easy. Being gay is still not easy. But I, as I am sure many others will agree, saw the cutest and most amazing love story being unfurled.
"If I had to choose a companion to be at the return of eternal darkness with, I'd choose you."
"Albus: Just - we'll be better off without each other, okay? Scorpius is left looking up after him. Heartbroken."
"And now the staircases part - the two look at each other - one full of guilt - the other full of pain - both full of unhappiness."
"Albus finally gets the upper hand and pins Scorpius to the ground. Albus: Well, I wasn't a loser before I met you."
"Because I don't think Voldemort is capable of having a kind son - and you're kind, Scorpius. To the depths of your belly, to the tips of your fingers."
"Albus: You make me stronger - and when Dad forced us apart - without -
Scorpius: I didn't much like my life without you in it either."
"Scorpius appears at the back of the stage. He looks at his friend talking to a girl - and part of him likes it and part of him doesn't."
Let's be honest here. You sold us a dream and then snatched it away. There was nothing platonic about that friendship. If they were opposite genders, they would have undoubtedly ended up together. It's sad to see that it's 2016 and we're still shying away from a beautiful young romance because they don't fit traditional relationships. Dumbledore was gay and there was no happy ending for him. There are probably 100 straight romances in the Harry Potter series. Will there never be one gay one?
The script is already written and produced, so it's hopeless for us to ask you to change your mind about the ending. But what about a continuation of the story? What about if the script ever gets turned into a movie? What if you just wrote an alternative ending and publish it on Pottermore?
Please, Ms. Rowling, it's already so hard for us in the world today, it's so sad and there was not even a flicker of recognition that "Scorbus" is anything other than what we've built up in our minds. Honestly, I feel heartbroken and betrayed, just like when Albus told Scorpius that they could not see each other again. There was finally some chance to make a big, positive change in the world via the most powerful medium of our generation. Please make Scorpius and his relationship to Albus a real thing.
Yours Sincerely,
A Young Gay Man in a Sad, Homophobic Country
