These kittens and puppies were locked in tiny, filthy cages covered in rust and feces

Animal rescuers in Tennessee recently stumbled upon a horrifying situation — a small taste of which you can see above. One elderly man was found keeping tiny kittens and puppies locked up in dilapidated, filthy carriers and metal wire cages that hardly seem fit for beloved pets.

And he's not alone. During the pandemic, instances of animal neglect and even overt violence have increased as people turn their helplessness, rage, and frustration on the animals stuck at home with them. For those folks who have difficulty caring for their animals on their own, the isolation of the pandemic has made the tragic situation so much worse.

That's why agencies like Tennessee's animal welfare team need more funding, now. Sign the petition if you agree!

Photos from the house of horrors-like property shows at least five kittens and two dogs crammed in enclosures that are filled with soot and poop — when there was anything in the cages with the animals at all.

In one case, four little baby cats were trapped in a mesh cage underneath heavy, dark tarp and suspended multiple feet in the air over some sort of household appliance, possibly a refrigerator. One puppy peered out at investigators from a rusted out, misshapen coop that was littered with dirty paper scraps. Those animals who were lucky enough not to be caged just free roamed about a property littered with old food and water bowls of varying sanitation levels, defunct household items, and more.

Fortunately, rescuers have removed these neglected animals from this situation and are in the process of rehoming them. We have no intention of blaming this aging pet owner for a situation that seems largely out of his control — but discoveries like this do make it clear that animal rescue operations are in dire need of more money, so they can continue to investigate neglect and abuse of pets in Tennessee.
