Reinstate Tar Heel Girls State Volunteer Staff

WHAT HAPPENED

A group of ladies asked to change the ALA Dept. of NC's Constitution to revise the requirements to be a commission member. They elected to change the constitution so that the Program Director (the one who plans and implement the program) would be appointment by the Department President instead of the commission. Thus opening up the possibility that a different program director would be chosen for each year. They also elected to change the constitution so no staff would be paid for working at THGS.

In doing all of this they fired the entire 2018 VOLUNTEER staff and commission. They replaced the commission members and the program director with people who have not been an active part of the program and have not be involved in the last 10 years, some much longer than that, or as far as we know at all.

WHY WE CARE

This is not focused on pay. We love this program and would come back again, and again with no pay. Also the pay was not significant to begin with. For example one staff member reports after 17 years of service on this staff she worked her way up to $200 for the week. For the staff a short day at Tar Heel Girls State is roughly 18 hours, not to mention all the time spent the weeks leading up to the program as well.

WHAT WE DO CARE ABOUT, are the INCREDIBLE women that make this program happen. For the 2018 program when you combine the years of experience of each staff member it totaled more than 300 years of experience participating in this program. That is what got wiped away with these changes.

Without these incredible women, this program that we love so dearly will surely die, and certainly will never be the same.

This program means so much to us, because it has allowed us to become the women we are today. And without these women, we would not love this program, and certainly would not be the women we are today.
