Stop the Resumption of US Horse Slaughter

Since 2007, when the last US slaughterhouse was closed down, horses have been free from the threat of slaughter in the US. But, as of today, we fear our horses are no longer safe.

Senator Max Baucus from Montana is pushing for legislation which would involve the reopening of horse slaughterhouses in the US. Currently, the Senate Appropriations Committee is in the process of funding a spending bill which would resume this horrific practice.

With no time to spare, we must urgently rally for the passage of The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011. If passed, this would end the slaughter of US horses and also prevent the exportation of US horses to other countries for slaughter.

It has come to my attention that the Senate is now considering the resumption of horse slaughter in the United States. This is a barbaric practice that does not have a place in civilized society.

There is a history of abuse at horse slaughterhouses in the US and undercover investigations have shown that the treatment of these creatures in their final hours is anything but humane.

The majority of horses that go to slaughter are in good health and are being sent to the slaughterhouse merely because their meat gets a good price. Responsible ownership means caring for your animal and IF necessary, humane euthanasia. A slaughterhouse is never warranted or acceptable.

I am writing to ask you to support The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011 which would protect horses from slaughter in the US and also from sending our horses abroad for slaughter. I hope you will see that this is the only humane way forward for our country’s horses.
