Donald Trump has just announced that he is invoking Section 740 of the 1973 District of Columbia Home Rule Act to federalize the Washington D.C. police force for 30 days in what he claims is a "crime–fighting mission" but is obviously actually a testing of the authoritarian waters and an excuse to flex his power by sending in goons to beat up homeless people and black kids.
The president added that people in local law enforcement "with proper leadership" will "immediately begin massive enforcement operations targeting known gangs, drug dealers and criminal networks, to get them the hell off the street, maybe get them out of the country, because a lot of them came into our country illegally." He's even threatened to bring in the military to run his crackdown.

There is absolutely no basis for this flagrant overreach of power. Crime in Washington D.C is at its lowest level in decades; progressive anti-crime policies are working as intended, and a violent crackdown will only make things worse.
We must make our voices heard and let Trump know that the American people will not stand for the deployment of the military against the public under any circumstances.
