Save South African National Heritage site from illegal mining operations

Canteen Kope, A South African national Heritage site, is currently under threat due to the recent lifting of A Cease Works Order aimed at preventing earlier attempts of mining within the region. Already on the 16th March 2016, a private diamond mining operation began. Various sections of Canteen Kopje have been closed to researchers, students, and tourists- ultimately hindering any further research projects. These mining operations are in violation of the National Heritages Resources Act, and are outright illegal as the South African Heritage Resources Agency has not issued any permits for any mining to take place.

We appeal to the South African Minister of Arts and Culture to put an immediate hault on these illegal mining operations and to acknowledge Canteen Kopje as a national heritage site in order to protect the ancient, and recent, heritage of South Afrca.
