Not all people are aware of the unsanitary conditions of the cows where their beef comes from and what type of foods they are fed.  These disgusting practices are not only unappetizing but deadly as well.  Farms that practice poor feeding habits of their livestock can promote mad-cow disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

The feeding practice that can lead to such deadly results is known as “poultry litter” because of an accumulation of debris that gets scooped off the floors of chicken cages and broiler houses; the debris consist of feathers, uneaten chicken feed and feces from the birds. Some “poultry litter” may also contain antibiotics, possible remnants from dead rodents, disease-causing bacteria and heavy metal.  Can you imagine feeding such things to cows??

Consumer unions and reports also state that the litter can contain both the excrement and uneaten pellets of chicken chow found in poultry litter can contain beef protein along with ground-up meat and bone meal.  Eating the ground-up meat and bone meal may contain infected bovine protein, which is the main culprit behind the spread of mad cow disease.

Even though the FDA banned feeding the remains of dead cows to living ones in 1997, they did not ban it when feeding chickens and other poultry and now they feed the contaminated poultry litter to the cow, which is also not banned. No one knows for sure how much poultry litter is collected and fed to cows but is not proper livestock feed and it has not been monitored and regulated.  It is estimated that one to two million tons of this disgusting “poultry litter” is fed to livestock each year as part of their diet.

Of course, it is the ample supply of the litter and the cost that makes this a regular practice, even though it affects the health of the animals and eventually those that consume the beef.  Even if the animals are not a meat source for humans, they spread of the disease through these practices is killing the animals!! The FDA needs to intervene in the feeding practices of cows on these farms. Please sign and share this petition to demand that the Federal Drug Administration ban the use of chicken poop in cow feed.

The Food and Drug Administration – You not only need to ban feeding the remains of dead cows to living bovine, you also need to put an end to feeding chickens and other poultry remains of dead cows. It is disgusting and deadly that farms are feeding their cows poultry litter.  You must put a ban on feeding the contaminated poultry litter to the cows. Please get involved immediately and save the lives of cows and others in close contact with an infected animal.
