AAP, BJP, and Congress: Clean the Ganga!

Ganga is a lifeline to 450 million people. If we succeed in cleaning the river in Varanasi, we will not only improve health, santiation, and well-being for millions of people, we’ll have a blueprint to clean rivers all across India.

Take action to clean the Ganga now!

The good news is that the Aam Admi Party, Congress, and BJP have publicly promised that if elected, they will champion the cleaning up of the Ganga River. But we can’t bank on promises, because that’s all we’ve gotten in the last three decades. The candidates have given us no specifics on how they will clean the Ganga, by what date they will clean it, or even what their standards of “clean” actually mean.

We are asking whomever is elected to pledge to design sewage treatment systems that:

1. Capture sewage from all the sources where it enters the Ganga river;
2. Work primarily on gravity, instead of electricity
3. Remove all harmful bacteria present so that citizens don’t suffer from cholera, typhoid, and various intestinal diseases;
4. Reclaim water, precious nutrients, and energy for re-use; and
5. Are able to handle the volume of sewage we’re actually dealing with today, and
will be dealing with in the foreseeable future.

So, on behalf of all those ordinary citizens who’ve felt frustrated by years of inaction, but who now see a real opportunity for change, we call on each candidate in Varanasi to come forward and participate in a live debate on this essential issue. You name the time and place of the debate and we’ll be there. Broadcast it on television or radio and we’ll watch it. There, you can tell us just how you will ensure a clean Ganga River in Varanasi within your next term of office. You can tell us what regular reporting you will offer, so we can not only cast an intelligent vote this election, but hold you accountable in time for the next one.

The race in Varanasi is tight. Political analysts are claiming that it may be won by a margin as slim as 40,000 votes. This makes all candidates highly sensitive to pressure from the public and the media.

This could well be the best opportunity we’ve had in years to get their attention, and finally restore the Ganga and the citizens who rely on it to better health. With the election just 15 days away we need at least 20,000 citizens in Varanasi to support a strong plan for a clean and thriving Ganga -- and you are essential to our plan’s success.

The people of Varanasi insist on the right to a clean Ganga.

21 days. 8K petition signatures. 5 meetings with candidates. And for the 1st time in the history of the Clean Ganga movement, every major candidate included a commitment in their campaign manifestos. That’s the power of Jhatkaa members speaking out for a clean Ganga. Pls “Like” http://on.fb.me/1sjqPML us on Facebook for updates. We’re now in a strong position to hold whomever wins the election accountable, but we’ll need to act fast as soon as the election results are announced. -Jhatkaa.org

We have great news: We’ve just met with candidates from Samajwadi Party and Communist Party of India (Marxist) and they’ve agreed to enact our 5-point agenda on cleaning the Ganga if elected! Can you share this petition http://on.fb.me/Rmn4sH on Facebook so that AAP, BJP, and Congress know we aren’t giving up? We have another meeting with AAP tomorrow, which is very promising. We’re making great progress, but with just 4 days left until the election we need to keep the pressure on! Thanks -Deepa

I write to you from the Ganga in Varanasi. We’ve met AAP and Congress to share our 5-point plan for a clean Ganga and to deliver your signature and 5,000 others. AAP has agreed with our 5 points in principle, but is yet to officially commit. Congress avoided giving specifics, and BJP keeps delaying meeting with us. We need to keep the pressure on until we get firm commitments from all parties. Pls share this petition on Facebook to keep the pressure on: http://on.fb.me/Rmn4sH -Deepa, Jhatkaa.org
