Homelessness has been steadily getting worse in San Francisco.
In some neighborhoods, like SOMA and The Mission, it has reached the level of a public health crisis.
So far, Mayor Ed Lee's genius plan has been to conduct sweeps that forcibly remove the homeless from their encampments, pushing them into residential neighborhoods. Without toilets or a safe place to sleep, homeless people are forced to use doorways and sidewalks in our neighborhoods.
Supervisor David Campos recently introduced legislation that calls for a State of Emergency on homelessness, but Mayor Ed Lee has totally dismissed it.Sign my petition to tell #EdLeeItsAnEmergency: declare a State of Emergency on homelessness in San Francisco!
The State of Emergency would do 3 things:
Sign the petition to tell #EdLeeItsAnEmergency: declare a State of Emergency on homelessness in San Francisco!
- Escalate our world-infamous homeless crisis to the level of cities like Seattle, LA, and Oakland (Mayors there have already called for states of emergency) and allows us to make a strong case for additional federal and state funding.
- Allow the city to use city-owned land to build temporary but highly effective Navigation Centers. These pop-up shelters are built on unused land, and they’re successful because they treat homeless people like adults. Unlike traditional shelters with super strict rules, a Navigation Center will allow couples to stay together, let you keep your dog, allow you to keep your belongings, and let you be transgender.
- Show the people of San Francisco that the mayor is taking this crap seriously!
We the undersigned find it appalling that you have dismissed Supervisor Campos' legislation to declare a State of Emergency on homelessness in San Francisco.
This city desperately needs more Navigation Centers that treat the homeless like adults. There's no reason unused land should sit there unused when so many people are desperate for shelter and community.
