The people of Mexico have made it clear: they want to protect marine mammals' rights and end all forms of exploitation for human entertainment! That's why Mexico's lawmakers just passed an incredible landmark piece of
legislation that will
ban the use of any marine mammals - including but not limited to dolphins, killer whales, and sea lions - as captive entertainers.A few years earlier, Canadian lawmakers had also passed legislation to ban the use of captive dolphins, whales, and porpoises for entertainment purposes.
Now we must turn the pressure on the United States to follow its North American neighbors' lead and protect marine mammals from captivity and use in shows! Sign the petition!Mexico's new legislation is incredible in its thoroughness. Not only does it ban individuals and organizations from holding marine mammals captive and forcing them to perform tricks and performances for humans. But it also bans any person or group from capturing marine mammals from the wild - ripping them out of their homes and away from their families. Even better: it also bans captive breeding of these animals, meaning that majestic animals like dolphins won't be born into servitude.
The only times when anyone can keep a marine mammal out of the wild is for scientific research to promote conservation, in order to help safeguard these animals' populations in their natural habitats.
Right now,
350 dolphins remain captive in Mexico, meaning the total number of captive marine mammals would be significantly higher. As a result of Mexico's new policy, they will all be relocated to oceanic pens where they can live better, happier, fuller, richer lives!
It's time for the United States to follow suit. Sign the petition to urge the U.S. Congress to take inspiration from Mexico and Canada and pass laws to show respect for marine mammals. It must prohibit holding these animals for captive entertainment purposes!
