If coal is such a profitable, successful industry, it seems strange that coal companies would need $1 billion loans from governments.
That's exactly what's happening in Queensland, where conglomerate Adani plans to build Australia's biggest coal mine. The cost of the coal plant is $22 billion, but they want $1 billion in the form of a governmental, taxpayer-funded loan.
Adani claims that it'll create jobs and help the economy, but they seem to be forgetting about the cost of cleanup. Spills are inevitable based on Adani's history. They were fined $4.8 million after multiple incidents of failing to cleanup horrific spills in India. And this says nothing of the endless pricetag of the looming devastation of climate change, which coal mines directly contribute to.
The science is in - coal plants destroy our climate, ecosystems, air, water, and in Australia, inevitably the Great Barrier Reef as well. We should not be creating any more coal mines at all, and the government should definitely NOT be funding them!
