Save Earth! BAN Single-Use Plastics in Canada

We call on current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Current Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna to BAN single-use plastics across Canada.

WHO is already in the process of doing so, you ask?

KENYA
EUROPEAN UNION
VANUATU
UNITED KINGDOM
TAIWAN
ZIMBABWE
MALIBU
SEATTLE
AUSTRAILIA
NEW DELHI
MORROCCO
RWANDA
NEW YORK
++MANY MORE

WHAT are some examples of single-use plastics, you ask?

PLASTIC BAGS
COFFEE STIRRERS
COFFEE CUP LIDS
STRAWS
WATER/BEVERAGE BOTTLES
FOOD PACKAGING
PLASTIC WRAP
PLASTIC CUTLERY/CUPS/PLATES
SIX-PACK PLASTIC RINGS
++MANY MORE

WHERE do these single-use plastics end up?

Roughly 5.3 million- 14 million tonnes wash up in various coastal regions, showing clear evidence of the copious amounts that do end up in our Oceans. (Jenna Jambeck, PH. D). These plastics harm wildlife and marine life by presenting a choking hazard, as well as being open for ingestion by these innocent and unsuspecting creatures. The constant presence of plastic also affects us humans, as we are susceptible to hormone disruptors, and also open to ingestion of the plastics as they enter our water systems and food systems (for those of us that consume seafood). They also, more often than not do end up in landfills, and not recycled, which leads us to the next point...

WHEN do plastics biodegrade?

NEVER. Plastics never biodegrade, they merely degrade into smaller, and smaller "microplastic" pieces that can end up almost anywhere, including inside the bodies of marine and human life alike.

WHY should we ban single-use plastics?

Convenience. A hallmark of modern-day human life. Single-use plastics are hugely convenient to our everyday lives, this is true. Now here are all of the ways in which they are silently destroying our lifestyle:
THEY HARM BOTH LAND AND OCEANS ALIKE
THEY ARE MADE WITH PETROLEUM (NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCE)
THEY ARE HARMFUL TO WILDLIFE AND MARINE LIFE
THEY CONTAIN HORMONE DISTRIBUTORS SUCH AS POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS AND POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYL

HOW can those in power actually bring this change into effect?

Are you aware that there are already many companies that manufacture plant-based and biodegradable alternatives to pretty much every single-use plastice product? When a large country such as Canada makes the move to ban single-use plastics, these companies are given a huge market to move into, not to mention large corporations will have no choice but to change along with their consumer. That is the plain truth, alternatives exist, but without the pressure from consumers like you and I, nothing will change. We have to go forth and DEMAND that CHANGE in order for it to take place, so let's make the move today to become CONSCIOUS CONSUMERS.
