Stop the Demolition of the Unity Mural

In 2022 Pepco plans to demolish the Unity Mural to make way for a substation upgrade in Adams Morgan. Please help the Hola Cultra interns preserve the Unity Mural and its place in the history of the community.

Hi, my name is Lance Hampton. I attend Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. and I am currently an intern in Hola Cultura's Summer Internship Program. Community support is needed to protect a piece of history that speaks about D.C.'s changing communities. I hope that you choose to be a preservationist of the history and art that is so important to our city.  

The Unity Mural was painted in the summer of 1982, bringing together two of the most prominent Latino organizations of its time: the Latin American Youth Center and the now defunct cultural center, El Centro de Arte. But the Mural's imagery reflects the even more diverse origins and cultural backgrounds of the student artists who created it nearly forty years ago. The Unity Mural holds historical significance, reflecting D.C.'s past during a time when the city was changing. Today, it's a time capsule to a bygone era. Although once Latino neighborhoods are losing their Latinidad, saving the legacy of the Unity Mural will honor our shared history, as residents of the nation's capital, and the legacy of minority communities in D.C. 

The Mural is a testament of how change can happen in an otherwise tumultuous time in D.C. Two communities that saw each other as opponents found a common ground through art—art that spoke of their roots and traditions, unified on one wall to show that shared values can exist between different types of people.

En 2022, Pepco planea demoler el Unity Mural  para dar paso a una mejora de la subestación en Adams Morgan. Por favor ayude a los internos de Hola Cultura a preservar el Mural de la Unidad y su lugar en la historia de la comunidad. 

Hola, mi nombre es Lance Hampton. Asisto a la Escuela Secundaria Dunbar en Washington, DC y actualmente soy pasante en el Programa de pasantías de verano de Hola Cultura. Se necesita el apoyo de la comunidad para proteger una parte de la historia que habla sobre las comunidades cambiantes de D.C. Espero que elijas ser un conservacionista de la historia y el arte que es tan importante para nuestra ciudad.

El Mural de la Unidad se pintó en el verano de 1982 y reunió a dos de las organizaciones latinas más destacadas de su tiempo: el Centro Latinoamericano de la Juventud y el centro cultural ahora extinto, El Centro de Arte. Pero las imágenes del Mural reflejan los orígenes y antecedentes culturales aún más diversos de los artistas estudiantes que lo crearon hace casi cuarenta años. El Mural de la Unidad tiene un significado histórico, que refleja el pasado de D.C. durante una época en que la ciudad estaba cambiando. Hoy en día, es una cápsula del tiempo para una época pasada. Aunque una vez que los vecindarios latinos están perdiendo su Latinidad, salvar el legado del Mural de la Unidad honrará nuestra historia compartida, como residentes de la capital de la nación, y el legado de las comunidades minoritarias en D.C.
