Allow A Small Flock of Chickens in Muncie City Limits

Currently, Muncie City Code and zoning restrictions prohibit keeps a small flock of chickens inside Muncie City limits. We believe that this is an antiquated restriction and voilates our individual freedom. As well as limiting our capacity for food security. A small, well kept, flock does not pose environmental, health, or noise concerns for neighbors or the city.

The proposed changes are as follows:

We propose the addition of city ordinance Sec. 90. 30. “Keeping or Harboring of Chickens” (see attachment) to set forth the standards for keeping chickens in Muncie, which includes:

    1. Single family residences within the City of Muncie shall be permitted to keep up to 6 laying hens for household egg gathering. 2. Roosters are prohibited. 3. Chickens and their enclosures must be in the rear yard at least 10 feet from property lines 4. Chickens must be kept securely in enclosures that are maintained in a humane and sanitary condition
