Schools should be bastions of creativity, support, care, and perhaps most importantly, safety. So when footage was released of a California principal physically assaulting an autistic student this summer, parents were understandably horrified. The perpetrator resigned, but is now the vice principal at another school. This man should never be employed in a setting where children are present again.

In the video the principal violently pushes the small child, who literally crashes backward under the force from the grown man. It is every parent and every child's worst nightmare: extreme violence from an authority who is supposed to protect kids, not harm them. A new international study shows us that children and adolescents with disabilities are more than twice as likely to experience physical, sexual and emotional violence than those without disabilities.
Educators -- and especially principals, who tend to have more educational training even than teachers – should be aware of de-escalation strategies and how much care students with special needs deserve. To make matters worse, this happened to a disabled special needs student of color. And while the local authorities claim this incident wasn't racially motivated, it should worry all of us that a white man in a position of power feels comfortable pushing a young child of color to the ground.
Educators are responsible for the safety of children, and this man clearly is not capable of protecting his students. There is absolutely no reason he is employed at another school, because he should never be allowed to work near children again. Sign the petition now to tell Tranquility High School, who hired the perpetrator on as vice principal: fire this man immediately!
