Support electric cars: the UK needs 'smart' car chargers!

  • by: Frances D

The UK is one of the five most air-polluted countries in Europe. Our air is dangerousThis year, London breached its annual pollution limit in just five days. Nationally, around 50,000 people die prematurely each year thanks to air pollution. Many more adults and children alike suffer from asthma and other health complaints.

Electric cars are a great way to help tackle the problem. Their popularity is on the rise, which is great news. However, a new report has stated that local areas may start to experience electrical brownouts as drivers try to charge at peak times or in close proximity to another vehicle. This could impact the popularity and feasibility of electric cars.

The answer? Smart chargers to avoid brownouts and make owning an electric car the best option for the general public. ''The government should say all chargers from now on must be smart. Once they're in, it's very expensive to retrofit them,'' said Dustin Benton, the report's author.

Our air is getting less and less fit to breathe. We need to make changes, fast. Smart chargers will help electric cars become the popular, practical choice for UK drivers.

Please sign this petition and demand that the government make it compulsory for all new electric car chargers to be smart chargers. With enough signatures it will send a clear message: the public want action now to get cleaner cars on the road.

Greg Clark MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and the UK government:

The UK has a serious air pollution problem. The EU is threatening legal action because our air is so dangerous. Around 50,000 people are dying prematurely each year from breathing it in.

Electric cars are a great step forward, but to make them feasible we need smart chargers. Please make it compulsory that all new electric car chargers are smart.
