Will the Avengers Stand Together for Equal Pay?

Avengers: Infinity War is one of the highest grossing movies of all time — making more than $106 million on its opening day.

But the heroes of Avengers can do more than fight Thanos and save the universe. They can follow the brave example of Dr. Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and take a stand for equal pay.

Recently, Cumberbatch announced that he would refuse to act in a movie if women were not paid equal to their male co-stars, challenging his fellow actors to "Ask what women are being paid, and say: 'If she's not paid the same as the men, I'm not doing it."

Care2 agrees! That's why we are calling on Cumberbatch's co-stars in Avengers: Infinity War to make the same public pledge for pay equality and refuse to act in movies where women are paid less than their male co-stars.

Sign the petition calling on Avengers actors Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) to follow Benedict Cumberbatch's example and refuse roles that deny female actresses equal pay.

When even high-profile actresses cannot receive the same pay as their male counterparts, it sends a dangerous message that women everywhere — in all type of careers — need to settle for less money than their male coworkers.

On average, Women in the US earn less than 80 cents for every dollar paid to their male colleagues. And this pay gap is even more striking for women of color. On average Black women make only 63 cents and Latinx women only 54 cents to the dollar paid to their white male counterparts — for the same work.

That's why it's so important for heroes, like the Avengers, to brave and publicly speak up to end this sexist practice.

Sign and share the petition calling on Avengers actors to do the right thing and speak out against gender pay gaps and say that they'll refuse to accept roles unless their female co-stars are paid fairly!
