New York City: Ban Wild Animals in Circuses

Animal advocates are applauding the introduction of legislation that could make New York City next to close its doors to circuses that exploit wild animals.

The legislation (Intro 1233), which was just introduced by Councilmembers Rosie Mendez and Corey Johnson would ban dozens of species of “wild or exotic animals for public entertainment or amusement,” ranging from elephants and big cats to bears, monkeys, zebras and sloths, among many others.

Research, numerous undercover investigations and news reports have exposed not only the problems inherent with using animals in traveling shows and forcing them to perform unnatural and degrading tricks, while denying them of everything that would enable them to thrive, but also the heartbreaking and violent abuses they’re exposed to behind the scenes that range from having food withheld to being beaten in training and blatantly mistreated .

Please sign this petition asking councilmembers to pass this legislation and make New York City the next to take a stand against this type of cruelty.

As someone who is concerned with animal welfare and the use of wild and exotic animals used in entertainment, I was thrilled to learn that legislation that would ban their use in performances is now being considered by the City Council.

I sincerely hope you will make New York City the next major city in the U.S. to take a stand against this type of exploitation and send a message that cruelty is not entertaining by passing Intro 1233.
