Demand A Pay Freeze For Congress During Government Shutdown

  • by: Michael McTernan
  • recipient: Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner

The American government is shutting down due to the inability of Congress to do their job. The shutdown will affect hundreds of thousands of Federal workers. Many of these families will lose their paychecks. All this because the Republican Party won't accept the results of the 2012 election.

It's time to send a message that we agree government is broken, but the breaking is being done by Congress, not the Affordable Care Act.

If these families have to suffer at the hands of Congress, then Congress should not be paid.

Dear Mr Boehner,

We the undersigned demand that you, and all other members of Congress, not be paid during the government shutdown. This shutdown is the result of the incompetence of your colleagues and no-one should be rewarded for incompetence.

This shutdown is set to hurt hundreds of thousands of federal workers. The knock-on effects are set to wreck the economic recovery. It will also cost billions of dollars. The last shutdown your party undertook cost two billion dollars.

As so called essential parts of the government you will continue to be paid.

We demand no paychecks be issued for Congress until Congress people do their job. It's the work you do that is essential and you are not doing it!

Update #210 years ago
The shutdown is over. Thank you all for sending a message to Congress that they shouldn't get paid for not doing their job. The pressure we created let our politicians know we want to to get down to business, and thankfully they finally did. The latest news on this issue is that the shutdown cost us $24 Billion, making Ted Cruz a very expensive politician. How is that for fiscal responsibility? Let us all be vigilant in the future, and never let a small minority hold our economy to ransom!

Today NBC covered the story of families whose loved ones were killed in the line of duty that will not be paid death benefits:

This shutdown continues and families are suffering. We need as many people as possible to sign this petition to send the message to Congress that enough is enough. Please share the petition with your friends and families.
