A Ban on Assault Weapons in Florida NOW

Nikolas Cruz got his hands on an AR-15. Later, he went to a school in Parkland, Florida, and shot and killed 17 people. The death count was so high because his automatic weapon allowed him to fire off multiple rounds a second. Shooting indiscriminately at innocent students.

Automatic weapons aren't used to hunt, they aren't necessary for self-defense, they are used to kill people, a lot of them at in a very short amount of time. But despite their singular use, they are currently legal and accessible in Florida, a state that has some of the laxest gun laws in the entire nation.

In fact, in Florida, you don't need a permit or license to buy a gun, nor do you have to register it. And the state doesn't regulate assault weapons like the AR-15, gun sellers can sell them to almost anyone and they don't even need a license to do so.

In the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016 which — at the time — was the country's deadliest shooting, Florida State Senator Linda Stewart introduced SB 196 - a bill that would ban the sale and transfer of assault weapons in the state. The bill never even got a hearing.

Then, the unthinkable happened. A year later, 58 people were murdered by a man using a converted automatic weapon. Stewart renewed her call for an automatic weapons ban in Florida. Again, the bill barely got traction.

Now, another horrific mass killing has come back to Florida. The body count was different, but the weapon of choice was the same — an automatic rifle. And still, Ms. Stewart's bill waits.

While Florida politicians like Marco Rubio have tried using their thoughts and prayers to solve the rampant mass shooting problem in America. Senator Stewart is trying to get common sense legislation passed that will stop the sale of these weapons that can kill dozens with just the pull of a trigger.

Florida state legislatures should be ashamed of themselves if they don't take this opportunity to pass SB-196. Now is the time to talk about gun control now is the time to take action and now is the time to pass an assault weapons ban.

Add your voice to this petition and tell Florida politicians to do the right thing. Tell them to vote yes on SB-196.
