TEAR DOWN THE FENCE ON ROUTE 29

For more than 40 years a public space has existed next to the Lachatong Creek bridge on Route 29 in Delaware Township. When we moved here 30+ years ago there was a picnic table and people would stop and have lunch along the creek. Fisherman would park here to walk across the road and fish off the bridge in the trout stocked canal. Cyclists would park and ride their bikes on Rt. 29 or the towpath along the canal. Nature lovers parked here to walk along the canal.

Delivery men would stop here for lunch or to make call.

During the summer local youth parked here to swim in the Delaware River. To those who grew up here this was considered a right of passage.

Right behind this parking area is a trail that allows riding through local farms.

In May, the week before Memorial day, a construction crew showed up and constructed a 250 Ft. fence totally blocking off this public area. According to the DEP representative this was done at the request of the police because the police were tired of dealing with issues that arose during the summer with the youth congregating here to swim in the Delaware.

Denying access to all who used this area respectfully is wrong. The job of the police is to deal with the issues as they develop not to decide that all who use this area should be denied access so there work load is limited.. There are other solutions to this problem. TEAR THE FENCE DFOWN AND ALOW ACCESS TO THIS AREA.
