For 62 years, the United States has been strangling the nation of Cuba with a trade embargo, cutting it off from the rest of the world in order to "decrease wages, bring about hunger, desperation and the overthrow of the government."
It was a cruel policy of deliberate starvation, impoverishment, and deprivation of basic necessities designed to punish the Cuban people for having the nerve to resist American imperialism. Today, it exists as an archaic relic of an era that ended decades ago and Cuba has made monumental strides in improving its human rights record, like the recent legalization of gay marriage and passing one of the most progressive family codes in the world.
Call on the White House to allow Cuba to rejoin the world and get the food, medicine, and other supplies it deserves!
Now that Florida has tilted deep red, there is no political need to continue the fruitless pandering to the radical far-right Cuban exiles who smear Democrats as "socialists" for fighting for gay rights and higher taxes on the wealthy.
Every year for 30 years, the entire UN General Assembly — with the exception of Israel, which operates its own appalling embargo on Palestine — votes unanimously to condemn the US embargo on Cuba. It's time to listen to the rest of the world and right this wrong that for so long has accomplished nothing but heap hardship and suffering on innocent people.
