Release Captive Spirit Bear Back to Great Bear Rainforest

  • by: Nyack Clancy
  • recipient: Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations, Hon. Steve Thomson

A young, orphaned male spirit bear, or Kermode Bear, (Ursus americanus kermodei), is living his life in captivity at the Wildlife Park in Kamloops, BC. The "wildlife park" is little more than a zoo. This small zoo enclosure is nowhere near a natural habitat for the bear nicnamed Clover. Bears roam large territories,- males wander a 15- to 80-square-mile home range.

Spirit bears are a subspecies of the North American Black Bear with 1/10 of the population having white or cream coloured coats. They are not albinos, polar bears or "blonde" brown bears. This very unique bear is found only in the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, Canada. Clover is only 1 of 120 of his kind in the world.

We ask for more rehabilation for Clover, and that he be returned to the Great Bear Rainforest as soon as possible.
