Help Protect Poros Island from aquaculture Industrialization!

This photo is from serene Poros Island in the Saronic Gulf, and I regret to inform you that the future of Poros is in trouble. In brief, a newly created 'Frankenstein' merger of 5 fishfarms renamed "Avramar Industries' plans to take over 1/4th of our Island for building roads and factories for their massive fishfarm in our sea operation! This is yet another disaster that our Municipality and small population of 4,000 have been fighting against for years. One privately owned fishfarm operation was tolerated for a number of years here, and we've seen the damage that has done. The Greek Parliament has recently voted to allow it, only because the bill was hidden in a much larger one that had nothing to do with industry and was not discussed, and some politicians are stockholders in this industry. GREED has no borders!

According to the most recent study, the proposal made by Avramar Industries will DAILY release 14.8 tons of feces (corresponding to a city of 33,500 inhabitants), food waste, toxic medicines such as formaldehyde, landfill waste, etc. into our sea! So not only Poros will suffer pollution but it will spread to other islands in the Saronic Gulf like Hydra and Spetses and their 'factories', located directly south of Aegina Island and Methana harbor on the mainland too. Join us in stopping this monstrous travesty! This is the Challenge we are up against - a David and Goliath story which, with your help, can have the same good ending!

Thank you for adding your name and sharing with your friends from everywhere on this earth! Find out how you can help us fight this monster with a visit to www.poros.gr Your email will only be used by this site when I add updates, unless you opt-out of those. Thank you! #savingporos

Update #5about a year ago

The Government has extended the deadline for the establishment of industrial fish farming zones by two (2) more years. While on 22.12.2021 the extension of the relevant deadline until 4.11.2022 had been approved by law provision, (triggering protests from residents and municipalities) the Ministry of Environment introduced in Law 4964/2022, which was adopted by the government majority on 28.7.2022, a new provision allowing the companies until 4.11.2024) to establish their fish farms.

What has happened is a merger - meet the Goliath to Poros' David -https://greekfoodnews.com/avramar-a-new-player-in-greek-fish-farming-to-invest-e25-million-in-factories/
Who is benefitting from this travesty? NO ONE!

"The vote Dec 23 - a few stable and active supporters of Poros and the rest of the affected coastal areas in their fight against fish-industrialization. The vote for is a highly disappointing - albeit expected - development, which sets Poros into the firing line, along with 20 other regions of the country. It is obvious that the Municipality and the residents of Poros will not wait for their execution, but will do what was promised in the Government, with which they are now in war conflict."

Bravo!! Thank you all who helped with your signatures to make this a WIN, not only for Poros but for all the Attiki region~ "With a historically important Decision on 25.11.2020, the Regional Council of Attica gave a negative opinion on the Study for the creation of a fish-industrial zone (POAY) in Poros and fully adopted the requests of the Municipality of Poros, as well as other coastal Municipalities of the country.
