Betty White Showed Compassion to Animals for Nearly 100 Years. Let's Honor Her Legacy.

Seventeen days before her 100th birthday, beloved actress and famed animal lover Betty White passed away. She spread delight and kindness with her gentle, joyous way in this world - and now, in honor of her January 17th birthday, the world is coming together to continue her legacy.

For more than 60 years, she worked with the American Humane Association to help ensure "No Animals Were Harmed" in the making of TV shows and movies, tenderly advocating for animals who were co-starring with her on sets. She also spent more than 30 years donating to and being involved with the Guide Dogs for the Blind organization, helping to raise awareness and funds.

In addition to caring for pet dogs and other domesticated animals, White was also passionate about championing the "underdog" of endangered wildlife - wolves. Persecuted and demonized for generations, some species of wolves are on the verge of extinction. But White saw this misunderstood creature differently, and recognized their inherent value and majesty. Because of her advocacy, she helped inspire the creation of organizations dedicated to researching and conserving wolves in North America.

As Ms. White told Smithsonian Magazine ten years ago, "There isn't an animal on the planet that I don't find fascinating and want to learn more about."

This level of compassion is something we could all benefit from - especially if we follow Betty White's lead and offer this compassion to our voiceless animal companions. Animals need us, and we also need them. Betty White showed us how offering unconditional love brings ample rewards to everyone, and the animals of the world need more of that.

Be Betty-White-good to your local animal shelters this January and pledge to donate time or money to help the animals in Betty White's name!
