In Harvey's Wake We Can't Go Backwards on Climate Pollution

Hurricane Harvey was the single largest rain event on record, swamping Houston and other communities along the Texas and Louisiana coast. Harvey dropped over 50 inches of rain on parts of Texas. Thousands are in shelters, uncertain of when they will be able to return home.

Across the globe, over 1,200 people are dead in flooding caused by a monsoon in India, Nepal and Bangladesh. It is unquestionable that climate change is making storms more powerful, more severe and more deadly.

Even climate-denying Texas governor Greg Abbott acknowledged Texas is facing a "new normal" in the wake of Harvey. Why then is Donald Trump trying to take us backwards?

Trump has directed the EPA to revisit vehicle efficiency standards set by President Obama. Roughly half our global warming pollution comes from vehicles, so increasing how far cars must travel on a gallon of gas is one of the most useful steps we can take to combat climate change.

Harvey will likely be the most expensive storm in U.S. history, and the federal government will need to spend tens of billions to help the area recover. Unless we welcome this as the "new normal" we must take action to decrease global warming pollution and stabilize our climate. If Trump's EPA weakens fuel efficiency standards, they are doing the exact wrong thing for our nation.

With the advances in electric and hybrid vehicles, defending gas guzzlers makes even less sense now. Our transportation future is pollution-free, and efforts to slow that transition will simply cost consumers more money out of pocket, while increasing the cost to our planet at the same time.

Sign the petition and send your message to Trump's EPA that we must strengthen, not weaken our efforts to limit greenhouse gasses. Keep fuel efficiency standards as strong as possible.

It is outrageous that in these times, the Trump EPA is considering taking our nation backwards by revisiting vehicle efficiency standards set by President Obama. Roughly half our global warming pollution comes from vehicles, so increasing how far cars must travel on a gallon of gas is one of the most useful steps we can take to combat climate change.
