Urge New Zealand to Ban Greyhound Racing

The Greyhound Racing industry in New Zealand would face parliamentary review

by August 2014, so let us add our signatures for the ban.

Recent response from Racing Minister Nathan Guy to the Government Administrations Select Committee's

recommendations for the greyhound racing industry, offer a mixed bag of positive results

and "wait and see" for animal welfare advocates seeking a ban on greyhound racing.

"We came to parliament looking for transparency and the racing industry have made it clear

that they do not want the public knowing what happens to greyhounds" Said animal welfare advocate Aaron Cross.

"The industries own internal welfare review which canvassed racing participants, found that no-one could account for six out of every seven greyhounds once no longer racing"

In response to the concerns raised in the industries own welfare review,

Greyhound Racing New Zealand appointed its first full time animal welfare officer.

Shortly after, the Chairman of their Animal Welfare Committee was caught in

a scandal involving the discovery of partially burnt bodies of young greyhounds

on his Pokeno property.

"What is happening to greyhounds in the racing industry is an absolute tragedy,

and one way or another this has to stop" Said Mr Cross.

"Probably the biggest disappointment with this ruling is allowing the industry to continue to self regulate.

This is an industry that in a nutshell kills dogs, for entertainment reasons.

There was an golden opportunity and even a recommendation from the Select Committee

that the Department of Internal Affairs act as an independent watchdog for this one-of-a-kind activity. Sadly, in our view, the Minister made the wrong call and has allowed

this industry to continue to self-regulate, in secrecy, despite its poor track record in this area."

"The industry has been repeatedly caught out. They are creating problems to which we seek a solution.

They have admitted there are problems, and are now heading in the right direction,

but that in itself is by no means a solution for greyhounds. In the meantime, they refuse

to be transparent with the public about their progress, and in terms of the greyhounds well-being that is a major concern. The public are being shut out."

"Transparency in terms of culling and injuries is an absolute must if this industry is to prove

its legitimate right to operate in New Zealand"

A key clause in the Ministers ruling is that the Greyhound Racing industry would face

parliamentary review by August 2014.

"The clocks ticking on this cruel and unnecessary industry. Said Mr Cross.

Unfortunately by the review date, hundreds of dogs will have been injured

and killed on tracks and in training, and hundreds more will have been culled for being too slow.

For their own best interests, racing participants should observe the growing public sentiment

on this issue and start thinking about life after racing. We remain convinced that even

if the industry does clean up its obvious issues, that greyhounds will continue to suffer loss-of-life, purely for the sake of entertaining gamblers."

"The relative isolation of this activity has been its greatest strength, but now that this is being dragged

out in to the open, its time for have the moral debate on whether or not using mans best friend like this

is something that New Zealanders will tolerate"

"The Select Committee said it was not ready to engage in "the moral debate" surrounding

greyhound racing but in doing so proved such a debate needs to be had at some point.

Politicians across the board are going to have to take a side over dog-racing sooner or later, and very carefully so if they want to align with public opinion."

Greyhound racing has been banned in some countries, with a very recent ban in Colorado,

and pending legislation that will soon see it phased out in Iowa and its last U.S. stronghold in Florida.

"This is the beginning of the end for dog-racing, but in the meantime these magnificent animals will continue to suffer on our tracks

with each day that passes. An end to racing cannot come soon enough

for New Zealands' greyhounds and those who care deeply about them"
