Demand a two term limit without a write-in option for a third

Dear Mayor Garcia and City Council,

I am writing to express in the strongest possible terms, opposition to the proposed Charter Amendment to extend term limit to three terms for the office of council members and mayor.

Changing the term limits of our elected officials from two to three terms, in order to extend presumably good governance might superficially seem like a good idea. However, following that concept to its logical conclusion, one would do away with all term limits altogether, and this takes us down the slippery slope towards totalitarianism. While this seems like an exaggeration, suffice it to study history and to observe governments where term limits have been extended or eliminated altogether.

Term limits, while imperfect, nevertheless serve as an important check to crony capitalism and other forms of corruption.

I strongly urge you to retract the self-serving proposed Charter Amendment that increases term limits to three terms.

Sincerely,
