Within minutes of Kevin McCarthy's ouster, right-wing pundits and lawmakers began pushing a frightening idea for his replacement—Donald Trump. For real. And the idea is gaining momentum.
If this seems crazy, consider the following:
- the Constitution does not appear to require that the speaker be a member of the House
- 90% of Republican House members are in districts that Trump won in 2020. Their voters would support this.
- There are reports that Trump might be interested, viewing this role as a way to get nonstop media coverage, say whatever he wants to from the House floor, and increase his odds of winning back the presidency. (UPDATE: Trump implies he would take job)
We need to stop this momentum NOW. We need to show there is strong opposition to this terrible idea, and we need to let the vulnerable Republicans members in districts Biden won that we will work especially hard to defeat them if they help make this happen.
Add your name, and join us in saying "HELL NO" to Trump as Speaker!
