When a pit bull — now named Takis from San Antonio, Texas — went out one day recently with her owner, she probably expected to go on the usual walk: to chase a few cats, bark at a few passing dogs and get pet by a few passersby. But her owner, a to-date, unidentified woman, had other plans. The woman connected Takis' leash and stepped outside.

A doorbell security camera captured what happens next. Takis' owner, her face covered by a hoodie, strolls up to a random house. There, she ties the dog to a portable basketball hoop and sets down a plastic bag of food. If the video had stopped there, one might not think anything of it. It looks like a responsible dog owner is about to go and visit a friend, leaving her dog with some food tied up outside. But that isn't what happens. One minute Takis is sitting patiently waiting to be tied to the pole. The next minute she is struggling to get loose as she watches her owner leave her to her fate.
Luckily, the homeowner found the dog and she was taken to animal care services, where, in less than 24 hours, someone had already applied to adopt her.
But just because Takis is now on her way to a happy home, doesn't mean her previous owner should get off scot-free. According to the Texas Penal Code, animal abandonment is considered animal cruelty and is punishable by law. The woman in the grey hoodie should be found by police and prosecuted for what she did. This story could have turned out much worse for Takis and that is unacceptable.
