Demand Missoula County Stop Trivializing Rape Cases!

  • by: Emily Logan
  • recipient: County Attorney Fred Van Valkenburg

The Department of Justice has documented a "disturbing pattern of deficiencies" in the dealing of rape cases by the Missoula County Attorney's Office. This includes a woman who was told "boys will be boys" after reporting the rape of her five-year-old daughter. Another deputy county attorney allegedly read religious passages to a woman, making her feel judged and blamed.

This pattern of trivialization, intimidation and condescension MUST stop. These women have been through immensely traumatizing experiences, and it is unacceptable that they should be made to feel responsible.

The Department of Justice's recommendations must be implemented to ensure that future reports of sexual assault are taken seriously. Please sign this petition today demanding that County Attorney Fred Van Valkenburg stop refusing to work with the DOJ and start implementing their recommendations as quickly as possible.

Dear Mr. Van Valkenburg,

It concerns me greatly that you refuse to take the Department of Justice's reports about the handling of sexual assault cases seriously. Your refusal to participate in their activities indicates a gross disregard for the women who have had terrible experiences while seeking justice for their abuse.

I am writing today to ask you to please stop holding up the change that needs to happen. Please implement the DOJ's recommendations immediately, and start taking sexual assault seriously.

Thank you for your time.
