The Mayor of Charlestown has entered into negotiations to sell the local municipal water company assets to and outsource the service to Indiana American Water Company for over $13 Million dollars.
We will be locked into this company with no local control. Our water rates WILL go up, the money will be spent and we will be left holding the bag.
Why you should be concerned:

Customer calls are to a 1-800 number
- Rates will go up immediately

Rates are charged from a state-wide rate table - not community based

Surcharges are not regulated by Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC)

Fire Hydrant surcharges are billed separately (not regulated by IURC)

No service levels are mandated in the sale agreement

Indiana American Water resells our water to the Fracking Industry

No way to maintain control over our well water levels or reserves

The city will get over $13million dollars, with no accountability of how money is to be spent
The answer:
Demand the city float a tax-free municipal bond fund and self-fund the needed water infrastructure improvements. This is the lowest cost alternative to our brown water problem.

Team update: keep applying pressure to city hall, the mayor, your councilman make your voice heard. Let us join together to tell our representatives that this is not right for Charlestown. We have spoken to an attorney, and numerous other organizations and we have the power to STOP THIS. We need to get the petition circulated and that will start door to door next week. Keep praying, keep believing, keep working for what is right for our tax paying citizens. GO..NOW.

Great job supporters. NOW continues to contact attorneys, legislators, and local councilmen to get them to listen to the customers and owners of this utility. We own this asset and we should have a say in what happens to it. Push everyone you know to sign this online petition. We will have walkers going door to door in the next week. We have 179 signatures, and many comments sharing our concerns. We only have until June 2nd to get our representatives to understand our concerns and support this initiative. Call, text, email your city councilman, tell them to vote NO on the sale of our water. This is not the right choice for small-town America.
This is not right for Charlestown.

Thank you for signing the petition. We need more signatures to present to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to stop the sale of our City's asset--our WATER Company!!! There are ~2900 water customers in Charlestown and we need to reach them all. Send this petition; tell them how to click on the link, then entering their name and address and clicking the green button that says SIGN. This is the only way to be counted today. Go NOW!!!
