Demand an Eco-Friendly Alternative to Styrofoam Cafeteria Trays

Single-use Styrofoam trays are thrown away by the thousands every day from school cafeterias. These trays are not only non-recyclable, but they don't decompose for millions of years- causing the trash to end up piled high in landfills and in waterways. It is extremely concerning to realize that overlooked items, such as Styrofoam trays, are detrimental to the earth as a whole and are ruining the environment, all while consuming irreplaceable natural resources. Styrofoam cafeteria trays should be replaced with Eco-friendly, recyclable, reusable, and/or biodegradable alternatives that will be instituted as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the environment. There are two main replacement alternatives to Styrofoam trays: (1) plastic trays that can be washed and reused; (2) biodegradable or compostable paper-pulp trays that can be thrown out and decompose in landfills. Even though Styrofoam is cheaper for schools. the negative effects of polystyrene should make the switch to biodegradable cafeteria supplies unanimous. Say NO to Styrofoam!

Update #13 years ago
We did it! After 2 years of fighting for the removal of Styrofoam trays in my school district, they’ve finally agreed to switch to a paper compostable version! Months of research, hundreds of petition signatures, and a $1000 grant later, here we are! None of this would have been possible without the support I have received from friends, family, and petition signers. So, Thank You!
