Tell Chris Christie to Ban Puppy Mills!
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will soon decide whether to pass a bill into law that would prevent irresponsible breeders (puppy mills) from selling pets in the state. Recently, both houses of the New Jersey legislature passed the Pet Purchase Act unanimously, with a 74-0 vote in the Assembly and a 37-0 vote in the Senate. It is up to Gov. Christie to pass the bill or veto it.
The Pet Purchase Act would require pet stores to disclose the identities of breeders and brokers who supply cats and dogs to their stores, and would prevent stores from acquiring animals from breeders not in compliance with state animal care standards.
Republicans, who typically side with businesses, are enthusiastic about the bill because it would put bad breeders out of business and prevent financial harm to families who acquire unhealthy, ill-bred puppy mill pets. According to the ASPCA, the majority of pet store puppies come from puppy mills.
