After a Malinois service dog died tragically confined to a cage for hours on end at a facility at Roodeplaat Veterinary in South Africa we now need to introduce an Amendment to the Law to allow service dogs home with their handlers and caregivers. Isolation has never been the correct option and any dog in a home surrounded by attention, care, love and motivation will always work more efficiently and productively. We ask for justice for Sky as she and so many others in service deserved better. Sky was a police K9 who spent her life serving and working alongside the people she trusted. After her service ended, she should have been given the chance to live out the rest of her life in safety, comfort and dignity. This was denied her when there was the option available to her. Instead, Sky suffered a tragic and devastating death after becoming severely injured whilst trying to escape her kennel. What makes her story even harder to accept is that concerns about her welfare and her distress in confinement had reportedly been documented since March 2026. Her death must not simply be ignored or forgotten. We need answers, we need accountability and justice for her untimely death must be made. Sky gave her life in service and the very least she deserved was to be protected when she could no longer serve. The circumstances around this tragedy needs to be addressed and people held accountable for negligence, cruelty and appalling decision making. Beautiful Sky you did not deserve this!
