Allow FAU High School Students to use the Recreation and Fitness Center

The students of FAU High School listed below request that the administration of FAU High remove the ban restricting students from using the campus Recreation and Fitness Center, or contact the Campus Recreation Advisory Board or other appropriate authority to request the removal on their behalf.

The privilege of using the Reacreation and Fitness Center would create a myraid of benefits for students, such as providing another form of much needed stress relief, physical activity, and save students time, money and frustration trying to use other fitness centers off campus. According to CBS News, "[o]ver 90 percent of U.S. high school students don't get enough exercise to stay fit and healthy" (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/teens-dont-get-enough-exercise/), and "[t]hree of the four studies involving an exercise intervention found that students given more exercise time [during the school day] scored higher on measures of academic performance," (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-exercise-school/exercise-linked-to-better-performance-in-school-idUSTRE8021OO20120103). It is unjust that the current FAU High Student Body is held accountable for the mistakes made by other high schoolers many years ago and restricted for this reason.

Students would be open to compromise, such as allowing students to use the fitness facilities on a "trial basis," much like the fifth floor of the campus library, where only a set number of students are allowed in at once (in the fitness center, this number could range from twenty to thirty). The students below also pledge to be model students of FAU High School if allowed in the gym, and to not cause any trouble or distraction. Any change is welcome over no change, and the student body is eager to hear if change will occur.
