No one ever dreamed we'd come to a point where babies were being sent to detention centers. But right now, the Australian government is deciding whether to deport 37 babies and another 150 refugees back to the infamous Nauru detention center.
Nauru is a human rights atrocity. These babies and their parents have been transferred to the mainland because Nauru detention center seriously lacks medical care and basic hygiene facilities. Doctors report health problems are rampant, and numerous women have come forward to report sexual assault and harassment.
One of the refugees put it simply:
"it is hell".
This is no place for anyone to thrive, especially babies and young children. Young lives stand in the balance.
