Legalize Chicken Keeping in Iowa City

5 benefits that Iowa City backyard chickens can provide:
-A progressive community attitude: Iowa City can help lead Iowa and the midwest in the Urban Agriculture movement.
-Enriching educational opportunities - for children and adults alike.
-Sustainable lifestyles choices - promoting healthy citizens, neighborhoods, and soil.
-Homegrown food source - the ultimate "Local Food;" decreasing our effects on the environment by consuming products that are grown in our own geographical region, city, or neighborhood.
-Lessons in food production and safety - Eggs don't come from cartons!

We, the undersigned citizens of Iowa City, IA, respectfully request our leaders to act now to change the City ordinance to allow up to 6 hens, no roosters in the backyards of residential zoning districts under certain specifications pertaining to food safety, enclosures, odor, noise, and waste.

We feel this is necessary for the sustainability of our community, green living, education, children's activities, soil quality, and local food supply. This step will contribute to Johnson County's sustainability.
Please hear our request. Thank you for your time on this important issue.
