Help Save Animals from Research Labs

More than 100 million animals are used in the US every year for experimentation. They are forced to live in captivity, endure painful experimentation, and are often killed at the conclusion of tests. The vast majority of these animals are not covered under the Animal Welfare Act and have no protection against cruel treatment.

Not only is animal testing a cruel practice, it is also an ineffective one. More than 90% of drugs that seem safe and effective during animal testing fail in human clinical trials. Additionally, animal testing is very unreliable in disease research. This means that billions of tax dollars and countless years are wasted by using animals in misleading research and testing. However, in recent years, new technological advancements like organ-on-a-chip or AI-modeling have come along that are better at predicting outcomes for humans. Yet, the government still largely funds animal testing over the development and use of these more human-relevant methods.

Around the world, legislators are acknowledging that testing on animals should no longer be accepted practice. In September 2021, the European Parliament resolved with a resounding majority to phase out experimental animal testing of any kind. In addition, 41 countries have already banned animal testing on cosmetic products.

It is time to bring an end to biomedical animal testing in our country. Now is the time for the US government to act by increasing funding support for non-animal, human-relevant testing methods and committing to enact policies that will end this cruel and ineffective practice.
