S.O.S. NATIONAL PARK "LAGUNAS DE MONTEBELLO"

S.O.S. NATIONAL PARK “LAGUNAS DE MONTEBELLO”
DEAR CITIZEN OF THE WORLD:
The members of “FUNDACIÓN CALMECAC SIGLO XXI, A.C.” and other ecological societies inform you about the severe pollution in 8 of the 59 lakes in “PARQUE NACIONAL LAGUNAS DE MONTEBELLO” in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. In this wonderful park live many different species of plants and animals which give life and color to this natural ecosystem, one with the most variety on the planet. Here live over 277 species, migratory and residential, over 65 species of mammals and 35 species of reptiles. There are around 208 varieties of trees and over 157 types of orchids. Some of these species of plants and animals are endemic and threatened by extinction. This type of ecosystem is very special, because they help to the capture of water, regulation of the weather, conservation of the soil, etc. All these are very important for our existence. Because of these ecological characteristics the park is an hydrological and terrestrial region with significance for its conservation as a part of the Mesoamerican biological corridor. It has national distinctions as a priority site for the conservation of the birds (AICA), and international recognition as a wetland as an international importance (RAMSAR), and considered for natural patrimony by humanity and by UNESCO (MAB program).
Because of all these characteristics mentioned above, we asking your support to rescue this marvelous place.
