Dear Mr. Benrud,
I'm writing today in the hopes that I can convince you to join dozens of other iconic companies in offering a vegan option at the historic Café du Monde in New Orleans.
By selling a cruelty-free version of your world famous beignets, you would be fulfilling the dream of over 5 million dairy-free vegetarian, vegan and lactose-intolerant tourists who flock to New Orleans yearly.
In addition to brightening the world of tourists, you will also be lessening the abuse and torture of thousands of dairy cattle in the US. The production of dairy requires manual, sometimes violent, insemination of female cows. In order to continue to produce milk, these cows will be kept in a constant cycle of being pregnant and giving birth. The baby cattle, taken from their mothers on their first day of life, become dairy cows themselves, or in the case of males, are sold for veal. These veal calves will die by the time they reach 6 months of age.
In the last year, Hellmann's, Ben & Jerry's and even Bailey's have successfully introduced cruelty-free vegan versions of their iconic products. The list is growing, with companies like Guinness who have pledged to abandon antiquated practices that require the use and abuse of animals. By offering a vegan version of your beignet, Café du Monde can join the ranks of conscious companies like the ones mentioned, and open the door to millions of tourists who deserve the true New Orleans experience.
