Columbus Grove Against 3 Story Storage Facilities on Warner

Currently, our neighborhood adjoins an industrial area, but is not directly impacted by these businesses. However, changing the single story storage buildings to multiple three-story buildings will significantly impact the quiet use and enjoyment of our homes, neighborhood greenbelts, backyards, and overall neighborhood appearance, impression, and desirability.

The residents of Columbus Grove stand against the modification of three existing use permits and the transfer of development rights to Extra Space Storage, and/or any other commercial entity, in Planning Area 36 for the following reasons:

  1. The additional lighting necessary due to the increase in building size and height will be invasive and disruptive.
  2. The neighborhood will be overshadowed by the industrial zone, thus intruding on our residential zoning and our use and enjoyment.
  3. Congestion on Warner will significantly increase at the Jamboree on-ramp, an already busy intersection.
  4. There is increased risk with regard to fire hazards and criminal activity due to the nature of the facility and its increased size.
  5. Our property values will suffer. Warner is currently lined with trees that obscure the view of the single story storage facilities. This was not unintentional on the part of Irvine planners, and diminishes the industrial feel of the area. However, building 3 three-story structures that loom over the back of Columbus Grove will destroy the neighborhood atmosphere. The appearance of an industrial building rising above our homes on both sides of Warner will decrease the desirability and value of our Columbus Grove homes.

We oppose the proposed plan to modify the existing structures and transfer of development rights.  Planning meeting is January 23, 2019, Room L102 at 1:30pm. One Civic Center Plaza.

Update #25 years ago
Dear neighbors,
The meeting has been moved again. The Irvine Company will now be presenting to the zoning committee on January 23rd, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at City Hall on Harvard. It is imperative that we have a good turnout at that meeting. A few neighbors met with the Irvine Company and discussed our concerns with them. They are redefining their plan, but will not make major modifications to their design. They need to see a lot of community support.
Update #15 years ago
The Irvine Company is postponing the December 12th zoning hearing until January 9, 2019. They are having a meeting on Monday, December 17th to review the plan, which provides for 500,000 square feet of storage on Warner wedged between Columbus Grove and Greenwood. The proposed structures will be 35 feet tall, and will have exterior lighting, and climate control. A traffic study is underway, but is not complete. I will bring a few other homeowners with me to this meeting.
