Roe v. Wade is Gone. We Must Demand the U.S. Congress Pass Protections for Reproductive Rights Now!

It's happened. The United States Supreme Court, along extremely partisan 6-3 lines, has voted to overturn the monumental Roe v. Wade decision via Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.

For nearly 50 years, Roe had guaranteed access to abortion in the entirety of the United States, protecting pregnant people from radical politicians who had tried to block healthcare access and bodily autonomy. Now that Roe has been overturned, it is open season on reproductive rights, as it's now up to each individual state to decide how to approach reproductive rights.

This is particularly onerous for poor individuals in the South and Midwest, where Republican-controlled states are poised to implement near or total bans on abortion.
And this has all happened in strict opposition to what the American people want. In recent polls, two-thirds of all Americans say they support Roe v. Wade and want it to remain the law of the land.

We must fight this attack on bodily autonomy by demanding that Congress pass federal abortion protection, now. The repeal of Roe v. Wade will have devastating, fatal consequences for people seeking to end their pregnancies -- and soon. Sign the petition to demand Congress pass federal abortion protections!

If Congress fails to pass national abortion protection quickly, more than half of all U.S. states are ready to ban abortion. The moment Roe was struck down, thirteen states immediately enacted bans through "trigger laws" that were already on the books. Many of these laws do NOT allow for any exceptions for the parent's health or survivors of rape or incest. People are already being impacted all across the country. This only represents the beginning of a tidal wave of anti-choice legislation that Roe protected us from for decades.

Currently, every state in the U.S. has at least one abortion clinic, but now, clinics in 22 states will likely shut down -- affecting 42 percent of Americans who identify as women, and not counting people with uteruses who don't identify as women. This will disproportionately impact undocumented immigrants, as well as poor, Black, Latina, teenage, and uninsured people. Outlawing abortion is simply outlawing safe abortion -- without access to legal procedures, we know that people who want to end their pregnancies will attempt dangerous methods.

The decision to terminate a pregnancy is deeply personal, and can be based on countless valid reasons. When it comes right down to it, not wanting to be pregnant is reason enough. But beyond that, the financial, physical, and emotional toll of pregnancy and parenthood can also lead someone to decide to receive an abortion. These circumstances are especially bad in the United States, where the same lawmakers who want to force people to remain pregnant are the ones who resist providing any form of support for them -- from paid leave, to healthcare, to funded welfare programs, and beyond. Politicians banning abortion while making pregnancy and child rearing impossibly hard is an utterly cruel detail in all of this.

This decision, which attacks Constitutional rights to privacy, could quickly snowball into a wider threat to LGBTQ marriage equality, gay sex, interracial marriage, and civil rights. Samuel Alito, the Supreme Court justice, who wrote the exposed document, explicitly criticizes same-sex marriage in the document, citing the same reasons.

Roe v. Wade safeguarded reproductive rights and access to lifesaving healthcare for nearly half a century. Now that it is gone, people intent on controlling others' bodies are ready to have a field day with stripping away rights and asserting their dominance over uterus-havers. Reproductive rights are not negotiable -- they are human rights! Rights that the vast majority of Americans stand in support of.

Nearly 50 years of progress towards reproductive rights, marriage equality, and civil rights are under attack. Sign the petition to tell Congress that Americans demand federal protections for abortion access!

Do you want to take more action but don't know where to start? Consider donating to some of the organizations that are leading the fight to make sure everyone has reproductive freedom, like National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL), Reproaction, Center for Reproductive Rights, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
You can also donate to an abortion fund local to you or search by location. Keep in mind the most at-risk states if Roe falls: Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.
